Looking for a Job? Make yourself stand out!
In a world of short attention spans and information overload, it is imperative that a job seeker does more than just create a cover letter and submit a CV when applying for a job. So, what can you do to enhance your chances of getting that interview and stand out above the rest?
Why do I need to do more?
HR departments are busier than ever; caring for current employees, planning and conducting performance reviews, reporting to management, and searching for the best talent. Often, CVs and cover letters are not the only shortlist criteria. Companies like to have a better understanding of soft skills such as communication, interpersonal and,self-motivation. Faced with many potential applicants, companies may scan the information in your application in the first round for shortlisting. What can you do to make that first shortlist and better your chances of getting hired?
How do I make myself stand out?
Make your application personal and specific to the job. What does this mean?
Your CV
Your CV should highlight the skills that the company is looking for, preferably with brief examples. “I worked in a supermarket that taught me how to interact and work in a team”. Make sure you mention charity work, volunteering, and other community activities on your CV along with brief descriptions. Links to social media can be provided such as your efforts to raise money for charities etc.
Cover letter
The cover letter should be specific for the job and company and address the question “why should I be shortlisted for this job?”. Make the cover letter no more than 1 page. Ensure you have researched the company and mention something relevant in your cover letter that touches on the company culture, values, or vision.
Video statement
A short 40-second video statement is an excellent way to present yourself. While preparing the video statement, focus on presenting the “real you”. You can talk about your training, interests, hobbies and, learnings. You will find that it will take 4 or 5 takes for you to settle on a video statement that is short and representative of who you are. The process of creating the video statement will make you think deeply about what to say, which can be a very helpful exercise in itself.
Less is more
A well-targeted approach to applying for jobs can be time-consuming since you will need to adjust the wording on your CV and cover letter based on the job description and company you are applying for. This approach may lead to you applying for fewer jobs, however, the chances of getting shortlisted will be much higher than a "scattergun" approach when you send a standard cover letter and CV to multiple companies without putting any thought into it. Creating a video statement will further enhance your chances of shortlisting.
