The Do's and Don'ts of Digital Marketing

Digital Marketing or Online Marketing and Promotion has become even more prevalent since the Covid pandemic started. A lot of local, small businesses had to be closed due to the government restrictions and the ongoing lockdowns which resulted in these small companies beginning to interact and engage with their customers and audience online. Many self-employed individuals and business owners started to utilise their online channels to keep in touch with their past and future clients, share news and events and implement and establish delivery and/or e-commerce services. Many features of marketing and advertising have moved online and companies have started to hire external digital marketing agencies or employed Digital Marketers to promote their business using digital technology and media.

In today’s post, we are looking at the DO'S and DON'TS of Digital Marketing to aid your business or help your journey to become self-employed and start your own company.

DO'S of Digital Marketing:

Know your target audience: It is so important to get to know your potential customers – what they look for, how you can reach them, what channels they use to shop, what age group they belong to etc. It is very useful and helps you in the long run, if you create your buyer personas.

Know your USP: Your USP is the unique selling point that differentiates you from your competitors. Have a look at what your competition offers and what makes you better and stand out – customers will search for something different and something that will give them more benefits.

Create original and relevant content: You can check out your competitions’ content, however, do not copy them. Your target audience may be different so you must find your own ‘brand image’. You need to decide what you want to communicate and how. You should create content that is visually pleasing, catchy, and relevant to your brand, business, product, and target audience.

Engage on social media: People are more likely to visit your website and look at your products if your customer service and communication skills are on-point. You need to determine what language you want to implement in your online communications and maintain it throughout all your interactions. Find connections, befriend, follow, reshare and interact on social media.

Use analytical platforms: Google Analytics, Meta Business Suite, and Tweetdeck are free-to-use tools for you not just to look at your posts and website usage, but to analyse all the data and statistics of your users and their engagements. Keep an eye out for trends and new events. If something seems relevant and has positive feedback from customers, make it a priority and perfect it.

Create a user-friendly website/app: If your website is not user-friendly, its search engine ranking will also be much lower and it also may cause a high bounce rate. All of these mean that people will be less likely to find your website when they search for a product or service, and they will be less likely to spend quality time on your website and engage with your service/content.

DON’TS of Digital Marketing:

Don’t focus on quantity:
Focus on quality over quantity. If you create content that is too generic and not relevant to your audience’s needs, people will not be interested in your content.

Don’t leave out SEO and mobile optimisation: Search engine and mobile optimisation are two very important tasks that need to be completed so you can get the most traction on your website/app.

Don’t forget to update and change: Keep up-to-date with industry news and trends and change your website and content accordingly.

Don’t rush: The results of a good digital marketing strategy may not show straight away; be patient, digital marketing or any kind of marketing take time to affect your business.

Don’t be reluctant to get help: If you decide to employ your Digital Marketer, there are many routes you can take; including hiring Kick-starters or apprentices as well as full- or part-time experienced and qualified Digital Marketers.
